LE Tonglet bounces back to No. 1 qualifier for Southern Nationals
LE Tonglet shrugged off Friday’s slow qualifying effort with a promise to do better on Saturday, and he certainly did, leaping from 11th to the No. 1 starting slot for Sunday’s Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway
“We tried our new motor Friday and had some problems tuning it, so we put our old one back in,” said Tonglet, the reigning Pro Stock Motorcycle champion. “We knew we would improve.”
The Tonglet Racing Nitro Fish Suzuki GSXR did just that, zipping down the quarter-mile in 6.954 seconds at 189.79 mph in the opening session that lifted Tonglet from 11th into third place. It was the quickest run of the session and just set the stage for his last lap – an imposing 6.904 at 192.93 mph that put Tonglet on top for the second consecutive race.
“We knew after our first run (Saturday) that we could step it up and go for it with whatever we did to (the tune-up),” he commented. “I think we’re in our championship form. We were at the last race (at Houston), too, but we had that (first-round, foul start) mishap. We’ll be ready on Sunday.”
His first-round rival is Shawn Gann (No. 16, 7.084 at 188.41 mph).
