Morgan has Lucas Oil Mustang raring to go
Veteran Pro Stocker Larry Morgan is ready to get his Lucas Oil Ford Mustang rolling in the fast lane at this weekend's second annual VisitMyrtleBeach.com NHRA 4-Wide Nationals at zMax Dragway.
After a two-week break that featured an exhaustive test session, Morgan is hoping this race weekend will bring continued improvement and a few round wins to his team.
"We've got our engine stuff lined up," Morgan said. "We can't wait to get back out there and we're excited to race again."
Morgan has struggled a little more than he expected in the first three races of the year but is confident he's got it all figured out in time for the unique 4-wide race.
"It's just a number of little things that have held us back," Morgan said. "Trying to get the car set up to the engine and the new power we're making just takes time and lots of runs. Our biggest problem is that everyone in this class is running so close together. You have to be perfect every run."
The concept of 4-wide racing was introduced to Morgan and the rest of the NHRA teams last season. Although this style of racing is still new, Morgan is excited and ready to battle for a victory in Charlotte.
"We're ready for the 4-wide," Morgan said. "We're excited about it. They've got a better tree for us to work with and it should make it better for everyone."
It's been a while since Morgan has taken his Lucas Oil Ford Mustang on a trip to the winner's circle and he's hoping a different format of racing will throw everyone for a bit of a loop, one that will be beneficial for his team.
"Maybe I need the craziness of 4-wide racing thrown at me," Morgan said. "I'm hoping we can figure out a way to get this ol' heap into the winner's circle real quick and if 4-wide racing is the change we need then I'm ready."
The second annual VisitMyrtleBeach.com NHRA 4-Wide Nationals runs Friday through Sunday at zMAX Dragway in Concord, N.C. Qualifying and elimination action will air on ESPN2.
